"An Ideal Husband" by Oscar Wilde

Many forms of drama deal with the social and political issues of a token society. In comedies such as Oscar Wildes nineteenth century play, An type Husband, the author often makes fun of such issues, or presents them in a contrasting itinerary than what the hearing might normally see them. These issues might include such aspects as the relationships mingled with the sexes in a particular class, or certain unique habits that were not normally accepted or permitted by that society. date these may be presented in a comical way to the original hearing, these issues might have a totally different impact to an audience of a different time. Gender relations have changed greatly since the time that An Ideal Husband was written, when men were considered the dominant sex. Women had modest rights in comparison, and were almost considered second class. Women had few opportunities if they requiremented to recreate. Most usually did not, their role was to supervise the household and support their husbands. The few that chose to work had few opportunities.

i have hold and seen this play performed and the audience including myself seems to have laughed at the wrong lines. i would love to see this essay expanded to include other plays by wilde, but i will reread this one, oh and a helpful hint, many older books and plays have expired their copyrights and now avalible for free off sites such as the gutenberg one.
