Mexican American Education: silent Separate, Still Unequal
Introduction:
A segment of the Preamble to the unify States Declaration of Independence reads we hold these truths to be self - evident, that every last(predicate) men are created equal (US Declaration of Ind 1776). The prevalence of slaveholding and racism in the linked States served as irony in the enactment of this phrase. Although the preamble explicitly supported equal homosexual rights, racism remained ubiquitous. The pervasiveness of racial prejudices predominately affected African Americans but was similarly pretentious to other minorities, such as Mexican Americans.
The origins of Mexican American inequality in the United States can be attributed to the legacy of conflict left behind by the accord of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed by Nicholas Trist in 1848, was a quietness treaty that ended the Mexican - American War. Under the treaty, Mexico ceded to the United States: California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado (Griswold, 1998, p.36 ) This created conflict amongst the Mexican citizens that were living in those areas. Over night, they became strangers in what was once their home.



Though the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was enacted in hopes of protecting the rights of Mexicans living in the ceded regions, the U.S. failed at retaining key nutriment that ensured those rights and they consequently become demographically and socially displaced. This social displacement promoted cast out attitudes and ultimately fostered the emergence of racism and segregation of Mexican Americans in the United States.
The social displacement experienced by Mexican Americans was most salient in the educational setting.
