Two Women of the nineteenth Century
This formal comparison of two American paintings at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Betsey Beckwith (ca. 1817) by Ami Phillips and A Girl in Japanese Costume (ca. 1890) by William Merritt Chase, brings attention to two opposite approaches of revealing two different personalities of the women who lived in the same century. Both paintings are half-length portraits of women who are both seated in a three-quarter expectal ready looking straight at the viewer. The scale of both figures is sozzled to a human size and their position close to the front of the picture plane creates a strong personal association between the sitters and the viewer.
