What could make Odysseus King of Ithaka, Trojan warfare hero, and god-like figure among men cry? Surely it would aspire an untamed injury that no other man could survive, or having to experience the slaughtering of his comrades. But that is not the case.
The first time that we meet Odysseus he is crying on the Beach of the goddess Calypsos Island because he is homesick. He is stuck present because on his journey home to Ithaka after the Trojan fight he and his men sailed to the land of the water flea where the island natives werent as civilized as they had hoped.
Odysseus and his men discovered the cave that the Cyclops live in and decide to stay the night. The Cyclops that lives in the cave is Polyphemus, son of Poseidon. When he returns to his cave and finds that the men in his home he immediately eats two of them and saves the rest, including Odysseus, for later.
The men get Polyphemus drunk in an effort to escape. Drunk Polyphemus asks Odysseus his designation to which Odysseus replies nobody (Homer,1965,np). Later when Polyphemus is passed out drunk Odysseus drives a wooden stick into Polyphemus eye, blinding him, and Odysseus and his men make their escape.
When Polyphemus let out for process none of the other Cyclops took him seriously because he was yelling nobodys killing me!
(Homer,1965,np). As Odysseus is sailing by he yells his true name back to the island and Polyphemus prays to his father Poseidon to take a vengeance on Odysseus. Odysseus brought hardship upon himself when he yelled his name back to Polyphemus.
Because Odysseus angered Poseidon and brought the gods wrath down upon himself and his men, he lost all of his remaining soldiers who were traveling home to Ithaka with him. This was a total of twelve ships full of men. Many of whom would have survived the trip out if not for the choices that Odysseus made.
