Novelist Sue Monk Kidd, in her novel, The Secret Life of Bees, tells the humbug of cardinal-year-old Lily, who runs away with her black ho determinationkeeper in 1964 in South Carolina, and of a sanctuary they find in the home of three apiculture sisters. Symbols are use throughout the novel to create imagery starting with the bees. The bees are a symbol that proves that imagery was shown in the novel. Lily says, The bees came the summer of 1964, the summer I turned fourteen and my life went spinning off into a whole immature country, and I mean a whole new orbit(1). The bees are a symbol of Lilys guide throughout the novel. Lily believes that the bees came to her to tell her that she should leave T. Rays house. This symbolizes the hard bunk and journey throughout the novel that Lily has to take, while creating a clear image of it. Another example where the bees symbolize imagery in the novel is when August Boatwright tells Lily about the role of the promote bee. in that respect she is, Lily, see her? said August. Thats the queen, the large one (94). The queen bee symbolizes female domination. The queen bee is the start out of all bees just as the Mary is mother of all women.



The rules of Augusts household are sympathetic to those of a queen bee. These rules help Lily to become a come apart person and allow us to view what is happening in the novel.

Lily says, There was a photograph of a char smirking in front of an old car, wearing a lighthearted colored dress with padded shoulders(13). The photograph of Lilys mother symbolizes how much she cares and admires her mother. In addition, it symbolizes the power of relationships in the novel. Lily believes that the photograph is rightfully important so she keeps it safe.
