Kalidas is regarded the greatest poet and playwright in classical Sanskrit literature and is admitted to be one of the greatest poets and playwrights in World literature.Nothing is certain somewhat his life ,exept that he was born in Ujjain,Madhya Pradesh.He has left us seven hold ups of which three atomic number 18 long lyrical poems:Ritusamharan(The Gathering of the Seasons),Kumarsambhavam(The Birth of the Son) and meghdootam(The Cloud Messenger).His three plays include Malvikagnimitram(Malvika and Agnimitra),Vikramorvashiyam(Urvashi won love by Valour) and Abhijanan Shakuntalam(The Recognition of Shakuntalam).Kalidasas last work was an epic entitled Raghuvansham(Raghus Dynasty).
When we turn to the play by Kalidasa,the Abhijanana Shakuntala,not only have the context and the story changed but,more pertinently,the character of Shakuntala is a contrast to the woman in the epic.There is almost a joust with the epic version which,in the presentations of modern times,has been maeginalised.In Kalidasas version we ar in the realm of delicacy and romace,of anguish and imminent disaster ,of pathos and finally,of happiness.The emotional range is infinite when compared to the epic narrative,but in the intermeshing of the emotions,the image of Shakuntala undergoes a transformation.




Kalidasa takes the theme from the epic but fills it egress with sub-plots involving a curse and a signet ring.The sub-plots draw in those elements which are of the supernatural and the magical,and introduce the unpredictable and irrational,acting as counterpoints to the otherwise kinda straight sentimentalist narrative.
The courtly attitude and the high stopping point is clearly reflected in the nuanced relationships between the characters.The play was intended for operation ,not for recitation,and was performed at the court festival for a small,discerning and sophisticated audience.
